Some rules must be established to safeguard the environment, in order to battle the threat of rising pollution. When the wastewater is treated, the solid sludge can seriously impact environmental life, as well as human health. The environment ministry has occasionally established detailed standards for the release of water, from Effluent Treatment Plants into rivers and other waterways.
Let’s understand the basic parameters of the effluent.
Types of effluent parameters
Effluent treatment is occasionally necessary for industrial facilities, to ensure that the quality is suitable for a range of essential operations. Three different types of water quality parameters—physical, chemical, and biological—help to gauge the water's quality.
1. Physical factors include things like color, flavour, odour, temperature, turbidity, solids, and electrical conductivity.
2. Contrarily, chemical parameters may include biological oxygen requirement, dissolved oxygen, pH, acidity, alkalinity, chlorine, and hardness.
3. The third group of parameters is biological, which includes bacteria, algae, and viruses.
What are the parameters of effluent?
There are 4 main parameters of effluent
1. pH Value
It is employed to measure the water's level of acidity. The station determines the requirements for pH value, between 6.5 and 8.5. These apply uniformly over the entire nation.
2. Biochemical need for oxygen (BOD) or biochemical oxygen demand
Except for Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu & Kashmir, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep, the standards for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) have been determined to exceed 20. Standards are set at no more than 30 in categories other than those listed above.
3. Total suspended solids (TSS)
For metro regions and state capitals with the exception of Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu & Kashmir, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep, the criteria for total suspended solids (TSS) are fewer than 50. Standards are set at less than 100 for the other categories.
4. Fecal Coliform (FC)
It is believed to be a dangerous strain of the E.Bacterium. Warm-blooded animals' intestines contain it. The benchmark has been set at fewer than 1000, which for sewage treatment plants across the nation equates to MPN/100 ml. These are applicable across the board.
