Why we use water softener in HVAC?
We are familiar with what hard water means and what are the preliminary options to treat the hard water. Hard water, while not particularly toxic to human health, can cause unsightly and inconvenient issues for your plumbing, and damage to appliances. One of these problems is the build-up of calcium deposits and lime scale, which presents itself as a white, chalky build-up around your faucets or in your bathtub. The scale formation of too much extent: lime scale build-up can also cause a decrease in your water pressure. To limit this damage, you’ll want to invest in a quality water softener which will help in softening the water.
But how do they work?
There are ample methods of water softening and some of the most important has been covered in this article.
>ION EXCHANGE
Water softeners all use the same operational principal. A water softener is an appliance that is integrated directly into your residential supply system, and they trade calcium and magnesium for something else, usually sodium as the swapping of minerals take place. This process is called an ion exchange where in the swapping takes place at resin beds. Calcium and Magnesium both carry a positive charge (cation), and within a water softener’s mineral tank, they cling to polystyrene beads called resin or zeolite. The hard water passes through the mineral tank and the sodium ions drive the calcium and magnesium off the beads by the process of substitution.
BENEFITS OF WATER SOFTENING IN HVAC
When soap is used with hard water, it forms a scum due to its reaction with the calcium and magnesium compounds in the water both hydrophobic and hydrophilic. Therefore, you may find that you have to use more soap to feel clean, or rewash dishes because the hard water leaves spots on them known as scales and spots. Water softening can actually prevent the build-up of lime scale in your pipes and can also prevent soap scum build up in your shower, bathtub, bathroom sinks and various other appliances. But to analyse the benefits of water softening systems in HVAC, one must understand what HVAC is.
WHAT IS HVAC?
HVAC also known as heating ventilation and air conditioning system is a form of plumbing where in water is supplied through pipelines in order to either heat or cool down the ambient temperature.
Feed water has hardness which can cause spots and scales to the plumbing system which can eventually damage the system. This will lead to the failure of system by bringing up the energy cost.
Water is softened in order to reduce the mineral in it which can lead to spots. The water with deficient scale causing agent provides ample amount of water pressure for the system to work. This increases the efficiency of system.
Softened water also saves the system from corrosive agents which can cause permanent damage to the pipes thereby decreasing the HVAC efficacy. This can also be reduced by softening the water.
