Sewage treatment refers to the process of treating wastewater produced by the household/commercial areas, before it is released into rivers. This treatment makes the water safe for release, back into the environment by lowering the contaminants/pollutants to acceptable levels. The receiving water must undergo this treatment in order to avoid contamination.
How sewage treatment plants work for treating sewage from malls?
The following conventional wastewater treatment methods, enhance the quality of wastewater released into the environment:
1. Physical treatment techniques,
2. Technique of chemical treatment, and
3. Method of biological treatment.
Stages of sewage treatment
Below is a list of the levels of processes used in sewage treatment plants, for shopping malls:
1. Initial/Preliminary Treatment
2. Primary Treatment
3. SecondaryTreatment
4. Tertiary Treatment
· Preliminary or Pre-treatment
In the majority of sewage treatment plants, this treatment is regarded as the very first treatment step. To eliminate large-sized particles like sticks, rags, plastic materials, etc., it uses bar screens of various diameters. This is accomplished by a procedure known as flotation and sedimentation.
Other portions of the plants might suffer damage if these were not removed. Large solid materials are broken down using communitors, and sand, dirt, stones, and other debris, are removed using grit chambers. While, it removes a lot of debris from wastewater, it still has a number of dangerous contaminants that need to be removed, before it can be discharged.
· Primary Treatment
Its primary goal is the physical treatment of wastewater to separate solids from it. Lighter solids, scum, and grease are skimmed from the surface, using bar screens and a grit chamber while wastewater is held in a tank during this process, called the primary sedimentation tank where heavier solids settle to the bottom, and are removed as a primary effluent that will be treated in a subsequent stage.
Now, the liquid effluent that is left is pumped for secondary treatment. This method eliminates roughly 70% of TSS (Total suspended Solids).
· Secondary or biological treatment
It uses the aerobic/anaerobic biological technique known as the "activated sludge process", to remove soluble organic debris that escaped from the previous stages. It comprises of an aeration tank and a secondary clarifier or sedimentation tank.
When compressed air is combined with liquid sewage, microorganisms proliferate and begin to break down organic materials. A portion of the secondary effluent which is created when aerated water enters a secondary clarifier, and the organic matter sinks to the bottom, will be recycled, while the remainder will be processed by a sludge digester.
About 70–80% of the organic stuff is eliminated during this procedure.
· Tertiary or Disinfection Treatment
In the majority of sewage treatment systems in malls, this is the final stage. The ability to remove up to 99% of disease-causing microorganisms from wastewater, is only available at this level.
Additionally, it eliminates organic materials and leftover suspended solids that couldn't be eliminated, in the earlier steps. It involves a procedure called disinfection, which significantly lowers the quantity of germs in the water, which is to be discharged into natural water bodies by using disinfectants, like UV radiation, etc.
