Every year, environmentalists from the Environmental Groups and NGO’s conduct research study aimed at identifying the health risks of Delhi's public water system. The purpose of this study is to identify contamination caused by large amounts of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. This approach differs from water monitoring under the Drinking Water Act because all pollutants are tested as a whole rather than individually. It was found that Delhi's water system was exposed to more than 2,500 harmful chemicals at the same time. According to the city's health survey, one in five people in the state capital carries potentially fatal illnesses rather than purified drinking water provided by the city's water supplier, Delhi Jalboard (DJB). Delhi’s water is a bacterial cocktail. The results of a survey of 600 water samples in the capital are shocking. Almost 20% of the samples were found to be unsuitable for human consumption. And that's ten times the level considered acceptable in the West, according to Indian standards.
A study conducted by the Health Commission of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) found that 111 of the 616 samples collected contained more than 10 "colony forming units (CFU)" per 100 ml of coliform bacteria. Toxic cocktails of water contained gut bacteria, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella. These bacteria become drinking water when contaminated with raw sewage, including human excrement. The result is a virtual biological weapon that can cause gastrointestinal disorders such as typhoid fever, cholera, gastroenteritis, and jaundice.
To make matters worse, high-end areas such as South Delhi and West Delhi areas like Karol Bagh are most affected by water pollution. This report is shocking in Delhi. But the situation may actually be worse. If the sample was taken during the midsummer or rainy season, the results could have been worse.Water pipes in many parts of the city is old. In many places they also passed sewers. Under these conditions, these drinking water pipes will generate microcracks.
