How to remove chlorine with Water Softener?
Unfortunately, a simple water softener does not remove chlorine but does remove calcium, magnesium, and iron ions in most cases.
Can water softeners get rid of chlorine?
Yes, if you have the right filter.
To fully answer this question, we must first learn how water softeners work and whether they can remove chlorine from water at all. Water that has not been filtered at the source contains a variety of hazardous chemicals, contaminants, and other elements dissolved in it. In fact, this type of water can be harmful to both you and your family. Furthermore, chemicals in water can cause significant damage to your skin, hair, and clothing.
The good news is that dissolved elements and harmful chemicals such as chlorine can be removed using GAC-enhanced water softeners (Granular Activated Carbon). We've put together a great overview of how water softeners remove chlorine.
What is the function of chlorine?
It is a good thing that chlorine is present in our municipal water. It kills all of the bacteria and viruses that would otherwise grow in our municipal water systems. However, once it has made its way into our homes, it is time to remove it.
Because it:
· dries out your skin and hair
· bleaches your clothes while washing
· damages your rubber gaskets
· kills healthy bacteria on your skin and in your gut
The primary function of a water softener is to reduce mineral concentrations in tap water such as calcium and magnesium. Water softeners accomplish this by using sodium-inundated resin beads. As water flows through a tank containing resin beads, sodium ions exchange places with calcium, manganese, and other minerals.
Instead of clogging your pipes, harming your skin, and adhering to the inside of your kettle, the minerals — and some of the chlorine — reside with the resin beads.
Water Softening Techniques for Removing Chlorine:
1-Catalytic filtration
By using catalytic filtration, you can remove dangerous chlorine and other harmful chemicals while also softening the water for safe consumption. This is accomplished by exchanging ions to remove dissolved elements such as calcium, chlorine, magnesium, and iron from hard water. In other words, water softeners replace hard elements with sodium-based elements. This means that the harmful effects of hard water are reduced. The soft water that results has a silky, smooth, and luxurious feel on your skin and hair.
2-Utilization of granular activated carbon (GAC)
Granular activated carbon is commonly used to remove chlorine in many water softening systems. GAC is typically added to the resin bed of a water softener during the initial stages of removing hardness from water. GAC reacts with the resin to remove chlorine from water as it passes through. This system's granular activated carbon is effective at removing chlorine from hard water for up to 2 to 3 years. The water softener resin, on the other hand, can last between 8 and 10 years, but it is difficult to remove GAC from it if the resin needs to be replaced. Because of GAC's ability to mix strongly with resin. As a result, if you want to replace the GAC, you must remove it along with the resin and replace both together.
3-Use of a strong chlorine remover
There is, however, a more effective and efficient method for softening water at home by removing chlorine. KDF-55, a powerful chlorine remover, is used in the system. This remover is a granular media that is intended to remove a higher concentration of chlorine than other known media.
When using KDF-55 to soften the water, it is recommended that it be placed in a media guard, which is a slotted basket firmly attached to the bottom of the water softening valve. As water enters the softening compartment, it is forced to pass through a basket containing KDF-55 media to remove all chlorine. Finally, chlorine-free water passes through the softening resin to remove the remaining hardness minerals and soften it.
SO, YES, WHEN PROPERLY EQUIPPED, A WATER SOFTENER CAN REMO?VE CHLORINE!
