The activity of hydrogen ions in a solution is referred to as "pH." Technically speaking, pH is defined as the logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion activity, in a particular solution. But, you may be asking yourself, "What does that even mean?"
A solution's acidity or alkalinity (basicity) can be determined by looking at what pH stands for. By measuring the pH of a sample of treatment influent or effluent, we are actually determining the water's acid-base balance.
Let’s see the effect of pH on the performance of effluent treatment plants.
Why is pH significant in the treatment of effluent?
pH levels between neutral and slightly alkaline (7 to 8) are ideal for bacteria and other species, which actively participate in wastewater treatment. There must be enough alkalinity in the wastewater to neutralize acids, created by active biomass during wastewater treatment, particularly nitrification, in order to maintain these ideal pH values for biological activity.
Alkalinity is essential to the wastewater treatment process because it allows for the maintenance of the ideal pH in the wastewater, while it is processed.
How is pH level in wastewater treatment plants maintained?
1: The pH of the system can be maintained between 7-8 by adding an alkaline solution, such as caustic soda or magnesium hydroxide, if all of the alkalinity in the wastewater process has been used up. However, this raises the system's cost and complexity.
2: In the process of treating wastewater, pH measurement is essential. Extreme concentrations, the presence of particle matter, the build-up of harmful chemicals, and rising alkalinity levels are all frequent issues in wastewater.
3: Regardless of whether the treatment is physical/chemical, biological, or both, pH has a direct impact on how well wastewater can be treated because it is a chemical component of the wastewater. It is crucial to treatment because it makes up such a significant portion of the wastewater's composition.
4: You must first determine the characteristics, or impurities, in the wastewater before you can start the treatment process. The starting and finishing pH levels, as well as the treatment techniques, can all be determined after you are aware of what you are working with. Following that, you may select the most effective chemicals for the job.
5: The pH of wastewater is adjusted with chemicals that also alter the ionic charge of the effluent.
The following basic or alkaline chemicals are used to raise the pH of wastewater:
· CaO (calcium oxide or lime), MgO (magnesium oxide), and Ca (OH) (calcium hydroxide, a hydrated version of lime), are the most extensively used compounds because to their availability, low cost, and high capacity.
· The volume of sludge is a considerable challenge, yet recovery is achievable. Lime is a calcium-rich mineral that is available as quicklime or hydrated. It is sold dry and must be combined with water, before usage to produce a slurry.
· Sodium hypochlorite (caustic soda), often known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a low-cost, controlled, and readily accessible chemical. It is often utilized for modest or occasional applications, as well as to limit sludge accumulation.
· Caustic soda is available in two quantities in liquid form: 50% NaOH, which begins to crystallize at 54 degrees Fahrenheit, and 100% NaOH, which begins to crystallize at 100 degrees Fahrenheit (12 °C). As a result, it must be kept or diluted appropriately before use.
· 25% NaOH is also accessible, and it begins to crystallize well below freezing temperature. Caustic soda is also available in anhydrous or dry form at a 100 percent concentration. During the diluting process, a lot of heat is produced. As a result, to avoid boiling or splattering, the rate of dilution and cooling process must be carefully managed.
· Taking all of these considerations into account, we may infer that pH maintenance is a crucial parameter in wastewater.
