effect of climate change in wastewater treatment plants, how does climate change affect water supply, climate change and surface water

Economic advancements, urbanization, and population growth are all contributing, to an increase in water use worldwide. Future circumstances are unpredictable, most notably climate change, which causes society to budget for and plan ahead for mitigation measures.

Understanding the science and using local knowledge is essential, for developing effective adaptation plans because managing the performance and location of wastewater treatment systems, in response to climate change is becoming increasingly important.

Let’s understand climate change’s effect on the operation of wastewater treatment plants!

Since, climate change makes it more difficult to predict future air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and sea level rise, it is widely considered to have a significant impact on infrastructure that has been developed by humans. Climate change may therefore have an effect, on both current and future water and wastewater treatment systems.

The effects of climate change and global warming on the earth are getting worse!

In fact, it is predicted that global temperatures will increase by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius, during the next 30 years. The wastewater sector is affected by climate change in a number of ways.

Larger concentrations of germs could be transmitted to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), for example, if it is connected to stormwater collection systems. Increased precipitation may also result in more sewage being fed into the collection system. Both of these types of accidents have the potential to lead to operational demands, which are greater than the wastewater treatment plant's capacity, jeopardizing reliability and raising operating costs.

The following is a discussion of some of the wastewater treatment issues, caused by climate change and global warming;

How does climate change affect operation of Wastewater treatment plant?

Water supplies can be overflowing

Wastewater treatment facilities run the risk of having their equipment swamped by increasing sea levels, near the large bodies of water.

Inundation of wastewater treatment plants may cause the infrastructure to become depleted and clean, treated water reservoirs to become contaminated. Furthermore, the delicate ecosystems that present in those bodies of water may be impacted, by the warmer water entering the current water supply.

Repercussions on wastewater collecting and treatment systems

Increased rainfall has been shown to have the most significant consequences, on wastewater conveyance systems through higher overflows, blockages, and breakdowns. It is expected that as rainfall intensity and extreme events increase, inflow and infiltration (I&I) into wastewater networks will increase.

The effects of climate change on wastewater pump stations

Due to increased inflow and infiltration caused by increased rainfall intensity, and elevated groundwater tables, pumping volume requirements for pump stations may increase. These factors might cause pump stations to wear out more quickly.

Treatment procedures are impacted by increased temperature extremes

Performance varying with temperature and increased odours are reported, as having the most effects on WWTP and processes as a result of increasing temperature swings.

Warmer temperatures may result in changed wastewater treatment plant performance, and increased wastewater strength, which are likely to intensify odour or influence inputs to the WWTP process, or effluent qualities.

Wastewater infrastructure stressing

Global warming and climate change are putting pressure on the current wastewater treatment infrastructure. Treatment facilities will need to be moved to higher elevations in order to avoid infrastructure flooding, due to rising sea levels.

Infrastructure will need to be improved to be more flexible and resilient, in order to withstand hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters. There will be fewer water resources available for treatment and consumption, as a result of the melting of snowpacks. All of these things will make wastewater treatment more expensive, and tax the infrastructure already in place.
