What is biogas and its advantages?
When bacteria breaks down organic materials in an oxygen-free environment, in a process known as anaerobic digestion or AD, biogas is created. Biogas systems recycle organic waste through anaerobic digestion, which contains both energy (gas) and useful soil products (liquids and solids).
Some organic wastes take longer to breakdown in a digester than others. Fats, Food waste, oils and greases are the easy organic wastes to break down. Livestock waste tends to be the most difficult. Warmer digesters, which are normally kept between 30 and 38 degrees Celsius (86 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit), can also speed up the breakdown of waste.
Production of biogas is increasing as more people set up biogas plants. Some of the benefits of biogas are as follows:
1: Biogas can be used to generate heat and energy for use in engines, micro-turbines, and fuel cells after it has been caught. Bio-methane, also known as renewable natural gas or RNG, can be converted from biogas and pumped into natural gas pipelines or utilized as a vehicle fuel.
2: Biogas is environmentally friendly. It is a renewable energy source. The gas produced by bio-digestion is non-polluting and actually helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (i.e. reduces the greenhouse effect). Because there is no combustion involved in the process, there are no greenhouse gas emissions into the environment; hence, using waste gas as a source of energy is an excellent strategy to counteract global warming.
3: Biogas is used to make organic fertilizer.Enriched organic digestate is a by-product of the biogas generation process that can be used as a complement or replacement for chemical fertilizers. The fertilizer output from the digester can promote plant growth and disease resistance.
4: It’s aSimple and Low-Cost Technology that encourages circular economy. Biogas production technique is relatively inexpensive. When utilized on a small scale, it is simple to set up and requires little cost. The gas produced can be used for cooking and electricity generation directly. This is what permits biogas to be produced at such a low cost.
5: Biogas can also be compressed to achieve the purity of natural gas and used to power automobiles in huge factories. The cost of constructing such plants is relatively inexpensive, and it generates green jobs. In India, for example, 10 million employment were created, largely in rural regions, in plants, and in the collecting of organic waste.
6: Many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) currently have anaerobic digesters on site to treat sewage sludge. These WWTPs must use this opportunity to utilize the biogas they generate.
7: For developing areas, it is a healthy cooking alternative. Biogas generators relieve mothers and children of the burden of collecting firewood. As a result, there is more time to cook and clean. More importantly, cooking on a gas burner rather than an open fire keeps the family out of the kitchen and away from smoke. This aids in the prevention of life-threatening respiratory infections. Sadly, 4.3 million people die prematurely each year as a result of illnesses linked to household air pollution produced by inefficient solid fuel cooking.
For India’sdairies, farms, industries and businesses, biogas systems can turn the cost of waste treatment into a cash opportunity.
Converting waste into power, heat, or car fuel is a sustainable energy source that can help reduce reliance on foreign oil imports, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance environmental quality, and create new jobs in the area.
