What are Total Dissolved Solids?
Total dissolved solids are organic and inorganic components dissolved in water. The lower the TDS level, the purer the water.
Thus, it refers to all dissolved minerals, salts, metals, and plant material in your water. Phosphates, nitrates, potassium, calcium, and chloride are the most prevalent elements in high TDS water, and they are also found in ordinary stormwater discharge.
Is high TDS synonymous with hard water?
TDS levels beyond a certain threshold may indicate hard water, however, this is not always the case. TDS levels in soft water can still be high.
If your water has a high TDS level before it is softened by a whole-house water softener, it will still have a high TDS level. When water passes through an ion exchange process in a softener, minerals are simply exchanged for other minerals, resulting in relatively stable TDS levels.
Does a water softener reduce TDS?
TDS in hard water is not reduced by water softeners. All water softeners operate through an ion exchange method. The damaging properties of hard water are mostly caused by the presence of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. Water will travel through a resin, bed of small plastic beads, or chemical matrix that functions as a catalyst to exchange calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions in salt as it flows through the water softener. As a result, the TDS level will remain nearly constant (there may be minor differences).
Water softeners are intended to "soften" water so that it washes brighter, rinses cleaner, and reduces scaling.Alternatively, the same soft water qualities can be obtained without the use of salt by softening hard water with magnetic or electromagnetic techniques.
Because a water softener does not reduce TDS levels, an additional filter (like RO) for drinking water may be required. However, salt-based water softeners add salt (sodium) to the water, which should be avoided by heart patients in excess.
What is the way out?
A reverse osmosis system is one method for removing TDS from water. Netsol Water range of commercial and industrial RO Plants is used by many users in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Although filtered water is typically supplied from a single faucet, Netsol also offers whole-house reverse osmosis filtering systems. This provides RO water from every tap in the house, even outdoor faucets. In addition, reverse osmosis is used with water softeners, allowing them to promote "spot-free rinses," and you can have the same water for consumption simultaneously.
