According to one report, inventory collected from SPCBs/PCCs was analysed, and it showed that 60–70% of dairy farms had up to 25 animals, 15-20% had up to 100 animals, and 15-20% had more than 100 animals. As a result, they have been divided into three categories: small, medium, and big dairy farms. According to analysis, 5-10% of dairy farms are in urban areas, 5-10% are in peri-urban areas, and 80-90% are in rural areas.
The management of dairy farms, the effluent and waste produced, has certain discharge limitations and is entirely managed by CPCB.
What are the CPCB Guidelines for Dairy Farm Environmental Management?
The removal of manure and urine waste from dairy farms is a major environmental concern. Water pollution and odour issues are brought on by improper dung and wastewater processing and disposal.
Bovine animals typically weigh 400 kg and produce 12–14 litres of pee and 15–20 kg of dung each day. Bovine dung, feed residue, and other organic, non-hazardous solid wastes and wastewater are produced by dairy farms, and must be handled and disposed of properly.
CPCB Guidelines for wastewater management in Urban and peri-urban Dairy Farms
The following are the guidelines for wastewater management:
i. To limit the amount of wastewater to 100 litres per day per bovine, water should be used sparingly for floor cleaning and other services, including bathing cows.
ii. To ensure proper wastewater processing, treatment, and disposal, adequate infrastructure should be offered. Wherever appropriate, they may build up private or shared treatment facilities. Local companies, bodies, and SPCBs should assist dairy farmers, business owners, and NGOs in establishing private or public wastewater/effluent treatment facilities.
iii. Effluent shall get adequate treatment to ensure that it complies with SPCB/PCC criteria.
iv. The shed's floor should be imperviously paved and equipped with a wastewater collection system. To ensure the safety of animals, the floor should not be slick.
CPCB Rules for the Management of Wastewater at Dairy Farms in Rural Areas
i.Water should be used wisely to limit the amount of wastewater produced by cattle to 100 litres per day.
ii. The ground ought to be paved, and wastewater ought to be collected and used in agriculture. To ensure animal safety, the floor shouldn't be slick.
iii. Water should be used sparingly while bathing cows and for other purposes, to limit the amount of wastewater produced per cow to 50 litres per day.
iv. Sufficient infrastructure needs to be set up to enable proper wastewater processing, treatment, and disposal. The establishment of treatment facilities should be assisted by local enterprises, NGOs, and SPCBs.
v. Wastewater needs to be properly treated in order to meet SPCB/PCC requirements or be used for a variety of medical purposes.
vi. The shed's flooring needs to be adequately tiled (impervious) and equipped with a wastewater collection system.
