What is Aeration?
Aeration is the process of bringing water and air together to remove dissolved gases and oxidize dissolved metals such as iron, hydrogen sulphide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This process happens in the secondary treatment procedures of activated sludge treatment in wastewater treatment facilities, and is often the first significant step at a drinking water treatment facility. An aeration system with an appropriately distributed oxygen supply is critical for optimal wastewater treatment and microbiological development. The efficacy of aeration is determined by the amount of surface contact between air and water.
What is the goal of Aeration?
The goal of aeration is to establish a large new and self-renewing interface between air and water in order to prevent interfacial coatings from thickening. The amount of surface contact between air and water determines the efficacy of aeration, which is mostly determined by the size of the water drop or air bubble formed, as well as the thickness of the water lamina created.
What is Aeration in the treatment of wastewater?
Aeration is an element of the secondary treatment process in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. In secondary treatment, activated sludge is the most prevalent method.
It is a sludge-activated technique that encourages microbial growth in wastewater. The microorganisms then feed on organic matter, generating flocs that are easy to separate. The bacteria that create the "active sludge" flocs are constantly recirculated back to the aeration basin after settling in a separate settling tank, boosting decomposition rates.
Water-fall aeration using spray nozzles is the most frequent type of aeration in industrial settings. Air is diffused into a receiving vessel holding counter-current running water in the air diffusion technique of aeration.
Aeration is used to enhance the quality and minimize contamination in liquids, soils, and foods. In this process, soluble iron and manganese are oxidized to insoluble precipitates. Aeration can also help with bacteria management by reducing ammonia and hydrogen sulphide levels.
The purpose of aeration is to achieve the following goals-
1: It eliminates odour and flavour.
2: It raises the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water.
3: It eliminates hydrogen sulphide and, as a result, stench.
4: It lowers the carbon dioxide concentration of water, lowering corrosiveness and raising the pH value.
5: Bacteria may be destroyed to some extent due to aeration.
6: It may also be used to combine chemicals and water.
How does Cascade Aeration work in Wastewater Treatment?
Aeration is achieved by natural draft units in Cascade Aerators, which mix cascading water with air that is spontaneously introduced into water flow. Cascade water is pushed to the aerator's top and cascades down through a succession of trays. To achieve iron oxidation and some decrease in dissolved gases, air is naturally introduced into the water flow.
For a variety of reasons, it is employed in the water treatment process-
1: By replacing the undesired gases in the water with oxygen, the unwanted gases may be removed.
2: Increase the amount of oxygen in the water.
3: By removing CO2, the corrosive characteristic is reduced.
4: It removes dissolved gases such as H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide) and CH4 (Methane).
5: Cascade aeration is mostly gravity-based, and this form of aeration is more efficient due to the large surface area in contact with the environment.
