Many individuals receive their drinking water from a tap, well, spring, river, or even a bottle, but you might be wondering if treated wastewater is safe?
When we look at a globe or a map of the Earth, it would seem that we have a lot of water available, 72% of the earth is covered with water. Unfortunately we can’t use most of it for drinking and washing purposes. As the earth’s population is growing, fresh water is becoming more and more limited. Recycling water and using it for various purposes like washing, cleaning and drinking can help ease water shortages.1.1 million people throughout the world do not have access to safe drinking water. Drinking water that is both safe and easily available is critical for public health.
The use of recycled water for drinking, on the other hand, is less prevalent, owing to the fact that many people are repulsed by the idea of water from our toilets making its way to our taps. While wastewater has the potential to be a significant resource, the majority of wastewater produced ends up in sewers and water bodies.
Can sewage water be purified to the point where it can be used for drinking and washing?
Yes, it is absolutely possible to purify sewage water!
In reality, many people believe that treated sewage water is usually cleaner than the water that is now accessible for drinking. The first step is to convert sewage water into reclaimed water. It's not nearly as difficult as it appears. The sewage water is subjected to many distillation processes. After that, the water is clean and no longer brown. The next step is to convert the reclaimed water into recycled water. At this point, the reclaimed water is given a last treatment to ensure that it is safe to drink.
There are a variety of technologies available for the purification process which may involve various stages:
Stage 1: Preliminary treatment
Sewage first undergoes advanced primary treatment, in which large particles are removed from water, before entering sedimentation tanks, where chemicals are employed to cause primary sludge to drop to the bottom and scum to rise to the top. Once the water has been separated, the sediments have been removed to the extent that the wastewater is clean enough to be dumped into the water bodies or ground.
Stage 2: Secondary treatment
Bacteria are added to wastewater in secondary treatment to ingest organic materials, resulting in secondary sludge that settles to the bottom. By the end of this stage we usually receive water free of contaminants and waste.
Stage 3: Tertiary treatment
This stage functions to remove micro-contaminants within the water. Tertiary treatment removes any remaining particulates from the water, disinfects it with chlorine, and eliminates the salt.Recycled water that is used to make drinking water is purified extensively and thoroughly. It's also commonly added to groundwater or surface water for further purification before being transferred to a drinking water supply, where it's treated once more.
Indeed, it has been demonstrated to have less toxins than already treated water supplies. After this stage the water actually becomes clean and safe for drinking. In situations where the sewage water has passed through a purification system, it is deemed fit for drinking and other cleaning purposes without any fear of any of the health hazards.
