Why is hard water available in Delhi?
Delhi has the lowest score of any major city in India for water quality to supply locals, according to a recent report by the “Centre for Testing conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on the Bureau of Food Consumer Affairs”.
Since the release of the report by Federal Minister Lam Villas Paswan, a political blow exchange has begun on this issue.
About TDS (Totally Dissolved Solids)
Totally Dissolved Solids (TDS) is an ionization of all inorganic and organic substances present in the liquid. A measure of the total dissolution content of the fine suspension form. TDS contains inorganic salts (mainly calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonate, chlorides, and sulphates) and small amounts of organic matter dissolved in water.
Drinking water TDS comes from natural sources, sewage, urban sewage, industrial sewage, and chemicals used in water treatment, and the type of plumbing or hardware used to transport water. In India, the maximum desirable TDS level according to the BIS standard is 300 milligrams per litre.
Hardness of water is caused by carbonates and bi-carbonates of calcium and magnesium which is included in TDS calculation.
List below gives the TDS of different areas of Delhi:
1-Sangam Vihar -TDS level=691
In Sangam Vihar's K Block, residents are watered by the government every 15 days. The test was done by using a water pollution meter to discover that one of the large barrels stored for water storage had 691 TDS (total dissolved solids). This is much higher than the target level of the BIS standard for up to 300 people.
2-Burari – TDS level= 362
Surprise awaited elsewhere in Burari, North Delhi. Private treatment units are being built in the colonies to purify the polluted water supplied to the area. The factory operator said the water measured by the TDS device showed a quality level of 362. This level is unsuitable for consumption. When the TDS device checked the contamination level of the sample with treated water, it showed about 35 to be drinkable.
3-Narela- TDS level= Over 900
South Delhi: TDS level= Over 690
North Delhi: TDS level= Around 350
East Delhi and Shahadara: TDS level= About 100 -200
